Board of Directors

The Point Lobos Foundation is a legally constituted 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is governed by a Board of Directors representing a broad cross section of the community.

Officers
 
Sandy Hale, President
Sandy has been a Point Lobos docent since 2006 and a Board member since 2008.  Sandy was a senior official at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, co-founded two companies that subsequently were sold to Fortune 100 companies, and headed the business school at Cal State University Monterey Bay.  He was previously Chairman of the Board of the California Coastal Rural Development Corporation and a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County.  He is a graduate of Stanford, Harvard Business School, and the Economics University of Vienna.  His wife Hope also is a Point Lobos docent. 
 
 
 
Augie Louis, Vice President
Augie is a Marin County native who graduated from Cal-Berkeley with a B. S. in Conservation of Natural Resources.  He spent 15 years in San Jose working for a residential development company.  He currently operates his own real estate investment and management firm.  He is a real estate broker and a general engineering and building contractor.  He and his wife, Holly Hudson-Louis built their home on the Hudson Ranch 10 years ago.  His son is a senior at Carmel High and his daughter is in 3rd grade at All Saints Day School.  He enjoys sailing and hiking the trails at Point Lobos.
 
John Drum, Treasurer
John has worked in the medical imaging field for over 40 years.  He has a B.S. degree in Organizational Management from St. Joseph’s University and an MBA from Temple University and also spent 4 years in the Air Force.  Currently lives in Carmel Valley with his wife Stephanie. They have two children and 3 grandchildren. Fell in love with Point Lobos over 20 years ago during a West Coast vacation and fulfilled a life’s dream of retiring to the Monterey Peninsula. He has been an avid birder most of his life and since retirement, has become passionate about digital photography. John is currently a volunteer photographer for the SPCA of Monterey County, photographing dogs and cats for their web site.

 
Bill Eckert, Secretary
Bill is co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Chrysalis Software, Inc. He has over thirty years in the computer industry architecting and developing communications software for firms such as StrataCom, GraphOn, and Chrysalis Software. Bill is an expert in the design and implementation of software for telephone call centers. Bill is a 1978 graduate of Stanford University who was amazed by his first visit to Point Lobos as a student 35 years ago and who grows more enamored with every visit.  Bill and his wife Priscilla are avid hikers, tackling the John Muir Trail in 2010.  He is grateful for this opportunity to give back to Point Lobos.

Karen Bernstein
Karen has lived and worked in Northern California for over 35 years and became a volunteer docent at Point Lobos in 2010. Karen and her husband Michael make their home in the Bay Area and enjoy travel, hiking, photography and exploring Point Lobos and the California coast. A graduate of University of California Berkeley with a degree in Physical Geography, Karen spent years as a planner and retail buyer for local department stores before changing career paths to work for a software company. Currently and for the past 13 years, Karen works as Senior Project Manager. Her current role is in corporate Information Technology leading global teams implementing business software application systems.
 
Frederick R. Brown
Until 2005, my wife Carolyn and I lived in Southern California.  I attended UCLA and CSUN, graduating with a Business Administration Degree as a Finance Major in 1969.  We have two boys and one grandson who all live in Oakland.  I am a semi-retired tax consultant and portfolio manager now living in Carmel and a volunteer at the Point Lobos Natural Reserve.  Currently I am the Website Administrator for the docent website and active in leading public walks at the reserve. I am the president of U S Tax Systems, Inc., a privately held tax software company.  I designed the professional tax preparation software for the company and presented tax update seminars to thousands of tax professionals for over 30 years.  Ever since our 1968 honeymoon in Carmel, Carolyn and I have been frequent visitors to Point Lobos, and we are now enjoying the benefits of living in this beautiful and exciting area.

 
Stan Dryden, Docent Administrator
Stan Dryden has been a docent at Point Lobos since 1999.  A former president of the then-called Point Lobos Natural History Association, Stan now serves on the board in his capacity as Docent Administrator.  Stan retired from Chevron Corporation in the early 1990’s and moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1997.  He has volunteered as a guide at the Monterey Bay Aquarium since 1998.  Stan is an avid birder, and is the author and publisher of Birding Lite: A Humorous How-to Guide for All Who Enjoy Watching Birds (birdinglite.com), which is sold at the Information Station at Point Lobos. 
 
 
Robert B. 'Skip' Flohr, Past President
Robert B. 'Skip' Flohr for most of his business career worked as the western regional manager for a national educational publisher.  He has also served as Chairman of the Sunnyvale Planning Commission and was a member of the Santa Clara County Planning Policy Committee.  Skip is a retired Naval Reserve captain.  He and his wife Dianne have two children and two grandchildren.
 
 
 

Sharon Hoffman
Sharon Hoffman is an English language and writing specialist. She was coordinator of a student learning center at National-Louis University in the Chicago area.  In addition, she taught research writing to international masters and doctoral degree candidates in Divinity at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  Sharon worked with cross-cultural training companies where her clients were employees of International Fortune 500 corporations. She was, also, a biographical researcher and special projects editor for Marquis Who’s Who publications, such as Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, regional Who’s Who publications as well as other Marquis biographical publications. Sharon received a B.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN; she received Masters of Adult Education from National-Louis University, Chicago. She has lived and worked in France, Germany and the United States. Sharon feels very fortunate to be a Point Lobos docent and a member of the Point Lobos Foundation Board.
 
K. Jeffrey Johnson
Jeff is thoroughly enjoying life in Carmel since retiring here nine years ago.  His career spans two fields, chemistry and telecommunications. 
 
Jeff earned a Ph. D. in chemistry from Washington State University in 1968, and then taught at the University of Pittsburgh for 11 years.  His research involved a variety of applications of computers in chemistry.  Then Jeff changed careers and joined Bell Laboratories, first when it was the R&D division of AT&T, and later when it became part of Lucent Technologies.  He became a technical manager, and worked on a number of telecommunications services including video teleconferencing and data transmission. 
 
Jeff has a life-long quest for learning.  He misses teaching, and therefore welcomes opportunities to explain scientific issues to others.  He is involved in the training program for Monterey Bay Aquarium volunteers as a teaching assistant.  He provides scoping training for new Point Lobos docents.  He is one of the Point Lobos docents who are involved in the school outreach program, both giving the PowerPoint presentation at schools and leading school walks at the Reserve.
 
Stella Rabaut, M.A., J.D.
Stella practiced law in corporate settings and in private practice in Texas and in Washington state for over twenty-five years.  During these years, she practiced as a solo practitioner, in-house counsel for an oil and gas company and as general counsel for a non-profit institution of higher education.  She has consulted with the Fetzer Institute on its Healing and the Law Project and has facilitated retreats for lawyers and judges in various settings, including the Whidbey Institute. Stella taught at the Leadership Institute of Seattle where she also served on the Board of Directors.  Her particular interest is sustaining the human spirit and well being while practicing law. Most recently she has focused on the challenge of Civility in the context of the legal profession.  She is currently serving as Consultant to Robert’s Fund, offering programs for lawyers on Civility at the Seattle University School of Law. 
 

Jay Sinclair
Jay’s introduction to the Monterey Peninsula came while attending basic training at Ft. Ord in 1962. Mississippi-born and Arizona-raised, he fell in love with the Central Coast and vowed to make it his home one day. Thirty years later this became a reality with the purchase of Peninsula Laser Print in Carmel. During those 30 years, Jay earned an accounting degree at Arizona State University, moved to Southern California to begin his career as a CPA with Haskins and Sells. Various positions in the accounting and finance fields led to multiple moves to Woodbridge, CT, Palm Desert, San Diego and Saratoga, CA before finally making it back to the ocean. Always an ardent volunteer, Jay is past President of the Monterey Museum of Art, served as Vice President of Arts Habitat, tax preparer for low-income seniors at Alliance on Aging, and is currently a docent at Point Sur Light Station, and a 17-year volunteer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. He also enjoys working as an occasional naturalist on local whale watching boat trips.

Jay and his wife Pat, a Point Lobos docent, enjoy hiking, photographing and relaxing along the trails of the Reserve between travel adventures and spending time with their son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren in Lake Oswego, OR.
 
 
Cindy Walter
Cindy Walter is the co-owner of the award winning Passionfish restaurant in Pacific Grove and an activist for sustainable oceans. Walter was instrumental in the launch of the sustainable seafood movement in Monterey County through legislative advocacy, public presentations, and educational forums for culinary students, restaurateurs, chefs and the public.  Passionfish holds the designation of Monterey County’s 1st officially green restaurant and boasts a sustainable menu. Walter serves on the Advisory Council for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and is a member of the Seafood Choices Alliance. During the past few years, Walter has been inducted into the California Restaurant Association’s Hall of Fame, been named  “California Woman of the Year” by State Assemblyman John Laird, labeled a "sustainable seafood expert" by Bon Appetit Magazine, and been among the Top Ten Finalists for the International Seafood Champion’s Award.
 
 
Ron Wormser
Ron was a chief financial and administrative officer for four nonprofits over a 40-year period before retiring and relocating to the Peninsula in 2007. Giving back is important to Ron and his wife, Marian. Ron volunteers for several local organizations in various capacitites including coaching and advising on governance, planning and financial issues. Ron and Marian's amateur photography focuses on seascapes, birds, flowers and marine life. To combine both interests in support of Point Lobos and its Foundation is a wonderful opportunity.

Candida (Dida) Kutz, Managing Editor Point Lobos MagazineDida is an editor, writer, biologist, research diver, former opal dealer, and founder of the scientific diving website, BluePlanet Divers.org. As well as being on the board of Point Lobos Foundation, she has in the past been on the boards of the Pacific Cetacean Group and the Monterey Chapter of the American Cetacean Society, where she continues to be part of “Team Vaquita.” She is a full-time editor for the Defense Language Institute, volunteers as a Monterey Bay Aquarium diver, and is a Member National of the Explorers Club.
