Experience Point Lobos, an educational program for fourth graders

“Experiencing Point Lobos” offers a specialized educational opportunity for local youth aged eight to twelve. Offering Point Lobos as an outside classroom to support and achieve California Science Content Standards, the program instills an enjoyment, appreciation and awareness of our natural environment and fosters a conservation ethic.

“Experiencing Point Lobos” has two components, a presentation provided by an experienced Point Lobos docent at the school prior to the visit, and a field trip of Point Lobos led by docents afterwards. Title 1 schools are able to apply for a transportation grant, enabling their students to participate.

Students benefit by learning about our coastal environment first-hand; they listen to sea lions, touch otter pelts and spend time near the ocean. The program has an overwhelmingly positive response from students. Click here to see more letters from children participating in the program.

Over 1,350 students visited the Reserve as part of this program in the 2012-2013 school year, and $13,000 in transportation grants were provided. Students from Gonzales, North Monterey County, Salinas and Soledad visited the park last year as part of this program, some of whom had never seen the ocean.

The Point Lobos Foundation is especially grateful to the Pebble Beach Company Foundation for their generous financial support in the form of transportation funds for the program.
