DOCENT PROGRAM

Docents at Point Lobos State Reserve volunteer a minimum of six hours per month of public contact service. There are over 150 Point Lobos docents, many of whom have been in the program for over 10 years. Answering visitors' questions at the Information Station,Docent Program showing visitors close-ups of marine mammals and birds through spotting scopes, bringing alive the history of Point Lobos at the Whalers Cabin and Whaling Station Museums, leading public nature walks, helping youngsters to understand and appreciate the beauty and treasures of nature on school nature walks, are the main activities of the docents. Docents find these activities, and the friendships they form in the docent group, both enjoyable and rewarding.

Docents are required to attend monthly training sessions to keep current and expand their knowledge. These meetings are held the first Saturday of each month. New docents are given a self-paced qualification training programs and are assigned to a mentor veteran to guide them.
